Children are fond of taking sweet things and parents have
little or no control over this. Most drinks for children must be sweet but the
question is what good are the sweet things doing to them? Most milk drinks are
sweetened with Acesulfame K and many mothers are quick to pick them for their
children without knowing the implication.
Recently out of curiosity I checked the ingredients of a flavoured
drink targeted for kids and I found out an alternative sweetener with a caution
of danger was used. Imagine aspartame being used as sweetener for drinks when
clearly aspartame has a danger attached to consumption. Children cannot even
read the instructions on some of these drinks, yet the drinks are approved for
sale to children based on the fact that the danger involved has been written on
it. Aspartame metabolism in the first place leads to some poisonous substances
that the body rigorously works to take out! Should children be exposed to such
danger and accumulation of dangerous toxic materials over time? Aspartame has a
dangerous implication if taken by anybody(a child inclusive)with a genetic
condition of Phenylketonuria with implication
as bad as nervous breakdown or even death. How will a child know if he has this
condition, how did a drink meant for children have aspartame sweetener and it
got approved by the FDA. The Federal Ministry
of health should check the approval of aspartame in drinks for children as
there may be more dangers involved than we can ever imagine.
The bad part of this is that this drinks are not even stored
properly, they are stored inside the sun or hot environment. The sweetener is
known to disintegrate at a high temperature and this is the reason it is not
used in baked products as well as fried flowers. When this sweetener
disintegrates, the possibility of methanol poisoning (effects of methanol poisoning) leading to organ problems
is quite high and possible chronic disease from there.
Most milk drinks are sweetened with Acesulfame K (read about it here http://www.healthline.com/health/is-acesulfame-potassium-bad-for-me#2)
, another sweetener that leaves a metallic sweet after taste in your mouth. Are they safe? I am not very sure, As a Scientist, I will not make assertions about a thing until I have a scientific evidence on it. If I were any parent though, I will limit the intake of such drinks by my children, it is better to be safe than sorry.
Next time you see your child holding a flavoured drink,
check the content, if you see aspartame as the sweetener, collect it, throw it
out and ensure he doesn’t take such again. God help us raise our children safe.
With this post, I have acquired more knowledge, I think children around me are now on the safer side. They are free from danger which is against their health (aspartame sweetener produced from aspartic acid). Thank you for enlighten us
