Milk is one of the most important part of diet and many
households ensure they have milk in stock always. Anybody growing in the
early/mid nineties will recall that milk was more of a luxury than necessity in
the home, there was much important things to spend money on back then, it is
good to see that the times have changed and milk is now a common household item
for all.
Many do not know however that milk comes in different types
of nutritional and ethical balance. Many only recognize milk according to the
price tag and brand names. Sometimes, people get to react to a particular type
of milk and they label the brand instead of the particular milk. Liquid milk,
can come in cans, tetra packs or sachet. The milks are usually labeled as
evaporated or sweetened milk but the most common of any brand is the evaporated
milk as the sweetened has not enjoyed customer acceptance so far.
The dried powdered milk are however more common and one can
conveniently say it takes over sixty percent of house hold milk use in Nigeria.
Many just pick the pack of the powdered milk they admire or the brand that has
been in market for long. People think the difference in prices is based on
brands and company name alone. Let’s talk about the two major powdered milk
types, when to buy them, who they are beneficial to and how appropriate they
are across age and gender. These two are aside the skimmed milk in which the
fat has been removed
The instant filled powdered milk is very common and is the
cheaper of the two. It is called instant filled because it is not the exact
original milk extracted straight from animal sources. It is a combination of
skimmed milk filled with vegetable fat. This means the animal fat in the
original milk has been removed and replaced with vegetable fat. This is a long
process handling and comes with lots of loss of nutrients in the final product.
Animal fat is known to contain a high proportion of cholesterol and as such may
be injurious on a long term to people taking the product, especially adults who
are over forty. This makes the instant filled milk a healthy choice for people
who does not want to gain weight, who wants to take milk without fear of heart
complications and who have grown past the growth development phase of life.
Instant filled milk contains vegetable fat that reduces the risk associated
with cholesterol intake and also supplies the essential nutrient needed from
milk. However, some fat soluble vitamins and amino acids might be lost during
the processing and as such this milk may not be adequate for someone recovering
from illness or malnutrition. It is also not the preferred milk for children in
the growth phase of life.

The full cream milk is the real deal when it comes to milk.
It is the exact whole milk as it is extracted from the animal. It contains animal
fat and has a distinct yellowish white colour. This milk is only slightly
processed to dry and the original nutrient from the animal is maintained. The
milk is very rich in all naturally occurring fats and amino acids and can be
used to easily restore a sick person, a malnourished child and it is very good
for children in their development stage. However, this type of milk may not be
too good for adults especially above forty. It will also be wise for anyone
running a weight loss program to avoid this type of milk especially people who
have the tendency to be obese. Anyone who also have traits of cardiac problems
in their family line may want to avoid this milk especially.
If you notice that a brand of milk gets you so fat easily
and sometimes purge you, especially when you take excess, you probably have
been taking the full cream milk. You can reduce the intake for a better result
or revert to the instant filled milk for a stress free easy to drink milk. If
you notice the milk you have been taking makes little or no difference to your
weight and you want a weight gain and healthy bone, switch to the full cream
milk and see wonders happen in few days.
As much as many Nigerians do not understand the peculiarity
of these two types of powdered milk, the choice can be of great importance to
our health and our family diet in general. None of the two types is bad or
good, they are serving different purposes and can both be beneficial if used
according to needs.
Next time you are picking up powdered milk from your
favorite store, the brand is not as important as the type of milk. That’s what
makes the difference.
Remember, if you are not sure, don’t consume, and stay safe
